Obituary of Barbara A. Zern
Barbara A. (Gehrke) Zern, 86, of Pottstown, PA, passed away on March 18, 2022, at The Lutheran Home at Topton. She was the wife of Kenneth F. Zern, with whom she shared 56 years of marriage.
Born in Reading, PA, on July 25, 1935, Barbara was the daughter of the late Samuel and Anna (Jacoby) Gehrke.
Barb graduated from Mt. Penn High School in 1953, and then moved to West Chester University, where she graduated in 1957 with her bachelor’s degree in education. Barb then attended the University of Colorado to receive additional credits. After her schooling, Barb became a teacher in the Pottstown School District for 10 years, Exeter School District for 25 years, and finally retired in 1995. Barb was an active and energetic woman; she enjoyed bowling in her younger years. More recently, she spent her time making pottery, baskets, penny rugs, and visiting Landis Valley Village & Farm Museum where she picked up thereom painting. Some of Barb’s fondest memories came from the many trips that she and her husband, Ken, took to Williamsburg, VA. Over the years, they visited 5-6 times a year, ultimately going over 51 times! She was an amazing wife, sister, aunt, and teacher, who will be deeply missed!
In addition to her husband, Barb is lovingly remembered by her sisters, Sandra Fister and Eileen Caschera; her niece, Susan Hawkins, wife of Richard Hawkins; her nephews, Christopher Elliott, fiancé of Joan Leskanic, James Fister, husband of Ellen Fister, and John Lubas, husband of Tracey Lubas; her great-niece, Madyson Lubas; and her three great-nephews, Alec Lubas, Weston Hawkins, and Bryce Hawkins.
In addition to her parents, Barb is predeceased by her sister, Greta Scully.
A Life Celebration will take place on Saturday, March 26, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. at Trinity Church of Boyertown, 250 Sweinhart Rd., Boyertown, PA 19512.
