Raymond Schaeffer

Obituary of Raymond R. Schaeffer

Raymond Randall Schaeffer, 93, of Lower Pottsgrove Twp., PA, passed away on February 26, 2022, at Walnut Woods in Boyertown, PA. He was the husband of the late Georgiann M. (Davidheiser) Schaeffer, who passed away in 2019.

Born in Pottstown, PA, on August 29, 1928, Raymond was the son of the late Norman H. Schaeffer and Margaret E. (Binder) Schaeffer.

Ray graduated from Pottstown High School in 1946 and was well known for his talent in baseball, from helping to win a Chestmont Championship to playing for Boston minor league in Bluefield, WV. In 1952, he was drafted in the United States Army during the Korean War. During his time in the military, Ray continued his passion to play baseball in Europe. After his honorable discharge in 1954, Ray began working for Schulz Baking Company in Pottstown, PA, where he would meet his soon to be wife, Georgiann, and eventually build their home on Ringing Hill. Ray’s warm personality led him into a sales position with Firestone Tire & Rubber Company in Pottstown for several years. He also had a passion for cars and could identify every year, make and model he saw on the street. After his time at Firestone, he naturally ventured into auto sales and spent many years at Ludwick and Bermont Motors, all the while driving Pottsgrove School buses in the early mornings and late afternoons. In 1978, the long gas lines and declining large car demand had Ray circle back to the bread business and he began working for Maier’s Bakery Inc., until his retirement in 1994. Even after retiring, Ray continued his role as a school bus driver, and volunteered for an assortment of projects at St. Aloysius Church. Ray enjoyed caring for his lawn, and was the first to lend a helping hand whenever his three children had a need for anything. Ray was a loyal husband, father, grandfather, and Phillies fan who will be missed by all who knew him.

Ray is lovingly remembered by his children, Lori (& Randy) Wade, Randy (& Teri) Schaeffer, and Mark (& Walt) Schaeffer; his grandchildren, Dr. Bradley Schaeffer and Katie (& Ian) English; his great-grandchildren, Zayden and Arabella English; and his sister, Eleanor Carroll.

In addition to his wife and parents, Ray is predeceased by his brothers, Linwood Schaeffer, Kenneth Schaeffer, and Walter Schaeffer.

A private graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family.
