Maryann Russell

Obituary of Maryann J. Russell

Maryann Jacqueline (Gwalthney) Russell, 75, of Pottstown, PA, formerly of Spotsylvania, VA, passed away on February 20, 2022, at St. Martha Center for Rehabilitation & Healthcare in Downingtown, PA. She was the loving wife of George Edward Russell, with whom she shared 50 years of marriage.

Born in Philadelphia, PA, on May 8, 1946, Maryann was the daughter of the late Thomas Francis Gwalthney Sr. and Anna Veronica (Woods) Gwalthney.

Maryann began working for SEPTA in 1969, and sporadically maintained her employment there for nearly 10 years, while simultaneously raising her children at home. She had the honor of being the first “Miss SEPTA” in 1971; she was the public face of the organization in the city of Philadelphia. Working for SEPTA was special to Maryann since her father, husband, brother, and a few nephews also worked there. Outside of work, Maryann enjoyed all things Tweety Bird, listening to Neil Diamond classics, and cheering on the Phillies, especially her favorite player, #8 Shane Victorino. Most of all, Maryann loved spending time with her husband, children, and grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, Maryann is lovingly remembered by her children, Beth (& Martin) Cooper, George (& Jeffrey Auch) Russell Jr., Gregory (& Maria McNeely) Russell, Joe (& Karen) Russell, Dan (& Angela) Russell, and Nicholas (& Heather Jennings) Russell; her grandchildren, Alex Russell, Veronica Russell, Justin Seabe, Jillian Russell, and Christopher Russell; and many nieces and nephews, whom she loved dearly.

In addition to her parents, Maryann is predeceased by her brother, Thomas Gwalthney Jr.
