Lawrence Farman

Obituary of Lawrence L. Farman

Lawrence “Slim” L. Farman, 87, passed away on November 29, 2021, at his home in East Coventry Twp., PA. He was the husband of the late Shirley L. (Stetler) Farman, who passed away in 2011.

Born in Niagara Falls, NY, on June 3, 1934, Slim was the son of the late John “Jack” and Rose (Banyai) Farman.

Slim grew up in Norristown, PA, where he was active with scouts and athletics at the local YMCA. He later moved to the Pottstown area and married his sweetheart, Shirley, from Stowe. Together, Slim and Shirley raised their five children in the country. Slim worked for several factories before beginning employment at Gill Quarries in East Norriton, PA, where he broke rocks for building stone. Slim worked there for many years before retiring as a supervisor in 1996. He had many hobbies such as dart throwing, fishing, creating bonsai, whale watching, building koi ponds, and relaxing in the sun - he loved the heat of a hot summer day. Most of all, he enjoyed practicing feats of strength. Slim was a phenomenal strongman and the undisputed World Champion of Leverage Lifting. Known as the Hammer Man, he thrilled audiences with his incredible performances. Without question, his most memorable performance took place in the mid 70's when he performed alongside his mentor, The Mighty Atom, thrilling a crowd of over 18,000 at Madison Square Garden. That night, a legend was born.

He is lovingly remembered by his daughters, Diane (& Randy) Thomas, Homosassa, FL, Penny (& Jerry) Battisto, Pottstown, PA, Trudi (& Shawn) McLaughlin, North Coventry Twp., PA, and Traci (& Stephen Jr.) Minnick, Millersville, PA; his grandchildren, Jessica (& Steve), Rachel (& Joseph), Sarah (& Adam), Nathan (& Ashley), Joshua (& Molly), Aaron (& Morgan), Derek (& Mindy), Olivia, Cecelia (& Eric), Max, Jacob, and Alex (& Riu); his great-grandchildren, Connor, Isabella, Aidan, Trent, Sadie, Lucas, Gabrielle, Caroline, Katherine, Layla, Marshall, Hudson, Matthew, A.J., Jason, Sophia, Mia, and Leah; and his devoted companion, Julie Lanphear.
