Obituary of Joyce A. Gerber

Joyce Anita (Rhoads) Gerber, 83, of Pottstown, PA, passed away on September 7, 2021, at her daughter’s home in Pottstown, PA. She was the wife of the late Reverend Daniel H. Gerber, Sr., with whom she shared 59 years of marriage.


Born in Pottstown, PA, on September 26, 1937, Joyce was the daughter of the late Clarence Haas Rhoads and Laura Elizabeth (Bell) Rhoads.


After starting her family, Joyce returned to night school and graduated from Pottstown Senior High School. She enjoyed crafting and gardening and in her early years, bowling, and square dancing. Later in life, Joyce supported her husband in his pastorship of the Wesleyan Christian Church, where she achieved 56 years of perfect attendance in her lifelong home church. She also was a devoted member of the church’s Women’s Missionary Society, which she chaired for more than 25 years. Joyce was also a fixture at The Cup Family Restaurant where she was known for her baking talents, which she continued in her retirement. She enjoyed traveling with her husband and close friends around the world to places like the Holy Lands, Egypt, France to visit her brother’s WWII grave, Alaska, Hawaii, and many other bus trips.  


She is lovingly remembered by her sons, Daniel H. Gerber, Jr., husband of Sandra Slaymaker, Oxford, PA, and Jeffrey D. Gerber, Pottstown, PA; her daughters, Donna K. Shanley, wife of Randall, Pottstown, PA, and Sandra L. Stitzer, wife of Mark Sr., Wernersville, PA; her sisters, Leona Tibbetts, Sun City, CA, and Lillian Gallagher, Gilbertsville, PA; and her seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.


In addition to her husband and parents, Joyce is predeceased by her siblings, Dorothy Schoenly, Althea Hockel, David E. Rhoads, Nelson L. Rhoads, Clarence H. Rhoads, Theodore Rhoads, William S. Rhoads, and Albert L. Rhoads.


A viewing will take place on Tuesday, September 14, 2021, from 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. at Houck & Gofus Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., 955 N. Charlotte St., Pottstown, PA 19464. A Life Celebration will follow at 11:00 a.m.
