Obituary of Joy Kolb Mayes
Joy (Tunnicliffe) Kolb Mayes, 97, of Zieglerville, PA, passed away on July 17, 2021, at Seasons Hospice – Phoenixville Hospital. She was the wife of the late John R. Kolb, who passed in 1991, and the late Carl G. Mayes, who passed in 2013.
Born in Stoke-on-Trent, England, on April 7, 1924, Joy was the daughter of the late George and Beatrice (Smith) Tunnicliffe Lightowler.
Joy could always recount delightful tales of her childhood in England. She loved music, dance, walking or biking everywhere and gymnastics, often being the girl at the top of the pyramid formations. She then lived through the Blitz, the bombings of England during WWII, and met John Kolb, an American GI at a USO dance. They married in England and moved to Pennsylvania after the war.
A British-schooled, gifted Executive Secretary, Joy excelled at her work, eventually landing at Firestone, using her excellent organizational and English language skills with her cheery, can-do attitude. She was a faithful member of First United Methodist Church in Pottstown, and always sang in the choir. But her real passion was her children and family who she was so very proud of. She followed their careers, and enjoyed time with them in their getaway in the Poconos since their childhood, creating beautiful memories.
In later years, after retirement and her beloved husband John had passed, she remarried to Carl Mayes, adding and embracing his family as her own. Together they had much fun traveling to many destinations in the world, attending elder hostels and included many visits to visit her daughter in Hawai‘i. They performed in musicals with “The Nifty Fifties”, a group who visited the elderly, and participated many more years in the church choir. With her giving nature, she schooled adults in English, volunteered with the Bloodmobile and church events.
Joy was always interested in new things, and kept up with friends via email even at age 97. And always, you could expect to be offered a cup of tea and a biscuit. At every stage of her life, her kindness, generosity, adventurous nature, and formidable determination has always shined bright. She always has been, and still is, a JOY.
She is lovingly remembered by her daughter, April (& James) Rutherford; her son, Ray Kolb; her sister, Janice (& Charles) Davidheiser; her stepsons, Richard Mayes and David Mayes; her son-in-law, David Wilson; her nieces and nephews, Joan Tunnicliffe, James Tunnicliffe, Nan Tindall, and Ryan Davidheiser; her step-grandchildren, Seth, Abigail and Jonathan; and her great-grandchildren, grandnieces and grandnephews.
In addition to her husbands and parents, Joy is predeceased by her stepdaughter, Joanne Wilson; and her brothers, Ernest Tunnicliffe and Maurice Tunnicliffe.
