Obituary of Arthur Pharaoh

Arthur “Bill” William Pharaoh, 85, of Pottstown, PA, passed away on January 16, 2021, at Brandywine Hall in West Chester, PA. Born in Waynesburg, PA, on August 14, 1935, Bill was the son of the late Henry and Alice (Stafford) Pharaoh.

Bill was a 1958 graduate of Penn State University, where he received his bachelor’s degree in Recreation Education, and was a member of the wrestling team. After graduating, Bill served in the United States Army for two years, being honorably discharged in 1960. After his time in the military, Bill began his career as a recreation director for Summit, NJ, Lehighton, PA, Millburn, NJ, and Fair Lawn, NJ. In 1966, Bill moved to Pottstown, PA, and served as the recreation director there until his retirement in 1980. During his time as recreation director, he oversaw the funding and development for both the Rickett's Recreation Center and Gruber Pool as he strove to offer recreation opportunities to all members of the Pottstown Community.

During the 80’s, he provided commentary for Pottstown High School Wrestling when high school sports first began airing on community TV. He served West Pottsgrove Twp., and Maier's Bakery, before retiring. He continued working part time into his 80’s at Turkey Hill and delivering pizzas.

Bill never wavered in his love of sports, and was an avid fan of Penn State wrestling and football, the Pittsburgh Pirates, and the Pittsburgh Steelers. He enjoyed eating candy, solving crossword puzzles, word searches, and Sudoku’s. Bill had a strong desire to be needed by others, and was always willing to help anyone who asked for anything, especially a good laugh.

He is survived by his children, Mark Pharaoh, husband of Lisa, Susan (Pharaoh) Yanos, wife of Tony, and Karen (Pharaoh) Murphy, wife of Glenn; his grandchildren, Jarid and Drew Yanos, Ryan and Conner Murphy, and Mark Henry Pharaoh; and his brother, Robert Pharaoh, husband of Claire.
