When last I knew Marguerite some years ago, she was an insightful and wise dedicated volunteer at South Providence Neighborhood Ministries.
My initial contact in 1986, for the 350 Providence Jubilee, was to gather Marguerite's oral history of her life in Providence after moving there from New Bedford as a young mother. She recalled Roger Williams Park when she "lived in the housing projects...and it was an ambitious day's walk. I can remember showing my son how to play baseball and I was worse than he was. To go to the park and feed popcorn to the ducks was an outing, but it was pleasant and relaxing."
Marguerite, in spite of the tragic losses in her life, was a model of resilience and buoyancy. When I think now of her, I remember her laughter. This quote, for me, reflects the light she shone on all who knew her:
“When you are joyful, when you say yes to life and have fun and project positivity all around you, you become a sun in the center of every constellation, and people want to be near you.”
I was lucky to have known her.
