Obituary of John F. Rutkowski

John F. Rutkowski, 97, of Pottstown, PA, passed away on Friday, November 22, 2019, at Keystone Villa at Douglassville. He was the husband of the late Mildred (Vetner) Rutkowski, who passed in 1979; and the late Carmella (Lucarelli) Rutkowski, who passed in 2008.

Born in Fagleysville, PA, on December 27, 1921, he was the son of the late Henry and Mary (Drozd) Rutkowski.

John was a graduate of the 1941 Class of Pottstown High School. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army, stationed at the Bluie West Airfield base at Narsarsuag, Greenland. He was employed for 40 years as a journeyman Tool-and-Die Maker at Doehler-Jarvis Company, in Pottstown, until his retirement.  He was a lifelong member of St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church, and later Saint Aloysius; as well as a member of The Holy Name Society.

After his family, John’s life revolved around his love of music and that of his accordion. He was known to say that he knew over five-hundred songs by memory. Starting as a child with the gift of an antique pump organ and soon after an accordion, for which his parents had to sell a horse, John became a local and high school celebrity.  In the 1940s his accordion went with him, to entertain officers and fellow soldiers above the Arctic Circle.  In the 1950s he led a jazz quartet, The Jumping Jacks, and into the 1960s and beyond, holidays and weekly get-togethers with family and friends at his beloved “Grove.” Into his 90s, he regularly played at veteran and senior homes in the Philadelphia area.

He is survived by his children, John E. Rutkowski, husband of Susan, of Maryland; Alice A. Rutkowski, of Vermont; Thomas P. Rutkowski, of Connecticut; and David M. Rutkowski, husband of Katarina, of Florida; his grandchildren, Stephen Rutkowski, husband of Beverly; Michael Rutkowski, husband of Sarah; and Kristofer Rutkowski, husband of Adriana; together with 4 loving great-grandchildren.
