Obituary of Janet Garner
Janet L. Garner, 87, of Pottstown, PA passed away on Friday, May 5, 2017, at Season’s Hospice in Phoenixville, PA.
Janet was born January 26, 1930 in Pottstown, PA. She was a daughter of the late Lawrence O. Garner and Ada E. (Evans) Garner.
She graduated from Pottstown High School in 1947. An active Pottstonian, she owned and operated Janet’s Nutritional Foods for the past 41 years. Prior to that she was manager and head bookkeeper for the former Sunset Manufacturing dress factory.
Very politically minded, Janet was elected Pottstown borough auditor for a term in the mid-1970s. She was a lifelong member of the Republican Party. Additionally, she was a member of the Court House Hill Council of Republican Women and the Republican Women of Greater Philadelphia. She was proud to have attended five Republican National Conventions.
Janet was a board member of the Tri County Active Adult Center. She was also a member of the Senior Circle of Pottstown Hospital, the Schuylkill Chapter Order of Eastern Star Chapter 338, the St. Gabriel’s Italian Lodge and past-president of the Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary,
Janet was a big sports fan both on and off the field. She was female athlete of the year her senior year of high school having played basketball, field hockey and softball. She was a long-time member of the Tri-County Sports Hall of Fame, as well as an ardent Phillies fan. She enjoyed annual trips to Florida to watch Phillies spring-training games.
She is survived by one brother, Charles D. Garner, Sr. and his wife, Suzanne (Pottstown, PA); two sisters, Jane E. Finkbiner and her husband, Charles E. (Newfoundland, PA) and Marie A. Dilliplane, wife of the late Richard E. (Pottstown, PA); one sister-in-law, Lucille E. Garner; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by two brothers, Lawrence E. Garner and Kenneth H. Garner and his wife Esther M; two sisters, Jeanne S. Duncan and her husband, Paul E., and Doris E. Garner, who died in infancy.
A visitation will take place on Friday, May 26, 2017 from 10 - 11:30 am at the Houck & Gofus Funeral Home, Inc., 955 N. Charlotte St. Pottstown, PA 19464. A Life Celebration will follow at 11:30 am. Interment will take place after the service at Mt. Zion Cemetery.
