John F. Monahan, 64, of Pottstown, PA lost his battle with cancer on Wednesday, October 4, 2017 in Phoenixville, PA. He was the husband of Rebecca M. (Bronson) Monahan with whom he shared 16 years of marriage.
John was born July 3, 1953 in Philadelphia, PA. He was a son of the late John F. Monahan, Sr., and Teresa M. (Cunnane) Monahan.
John graduated from Archbishop Dougherty High School in 1971 where he played in the marching band and took trips to Florida and New York City to play in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.He grew up in Philadelphia on Sparks Street and was an altar boy for his parish. He always felt the teachings of his faith very strongly. John’s parents, especially his mother, Teresa, held special places in his life.
He worked at JBTC (formerly FMC Technologies) for over 40 years designing wire-guided and laser-guided vehicle delivery systems for: automotive plants, newspaper printing facilities, major hospitals, paper mfg. plants, and Raytheon guided missile assembly plants. John received his bachelor’s degree attending Penn State and Drexel in the evenings. He also completed his Professional Engineer courses and licensing.
John and Becky enjoyed visiting their family in Nebraska, Colorado, and South Dakota. They made a bucket list of trips to: Phillies Spring Training in Clearwater, FL, Washington D.C., Niagara Falls, and Jim Thorpe, PA. Their favorite trips were to New York City, where they enjoyed long weekends seeing plays and enjoying the sights and sounds.
John received much joy from spending time with his children; especially his five grandchildren. He was a loved stepfather to Rebecca’s two sons and families. His last hope was to retire to Manitou Springs, CO.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two children: Ryan Monahan, (Crystal) of Gilbertsville, PA, and Megan Kahanowitz (Corey) of Phoenixville, PA; two stepsons, Michael Schultz, (Deb) of Coopersburg, PA, and Richard Schultz (Jess) of King of Prussia, PA; five grandchildren, Madison, Rylee, Teigen, Hudson, and Maycee; four siblings, Richard Monahan (Lisa) of Los Angeles, CA, Alan Monahan (Alison) of Atlanta, GA, Maureen McGinnis of Pottstown, PA, and Terry Lee (Bob) of Havertown, PA; along with eleven nieces and nephews, and his beloved kitty, Willow.
A calling time will take place from 6-8 pm on Monday, October 9, 2017 at the Houck & Gofus Funeral Home, Inc., 955 N. Charlotte St., Pottstown, PA 19464.
